Domestic Plasterers | 3 Steps When Preparing Painted Walls For Plastering
Getting your walls plastered is an excellent way to even out the surface for a smooth finish, paying tribute to the well-planned preparation that went into it earlier. If you've hired domestic plasterers for the final job, but are undertaking the wall preparation process yourself, then you will need to follow these steps to prepare your painted wall for the plasterers.
Wash The Surface
You should ideally always wash a painted wall surface before getting the domestic plasterers to do their job. This action will get rid of any grease or dirt, helping the plaster adhere better to the surface of the wall. You can use sugar soap available at most home improvement stores to easily remove grease, grime and fingerprints from the walls. Pre-mixed sugar soap liquid can either be diluted in a little water or can be used alone to clean your walls. Use a normal sponge to wash down the wall surface. Let the wall dry for a few hours.
Sand The Surface
The process of sanding creates an even wall surface with a slightly textured finish. This thin coarseness helps the plaster hold well to the wall surface. Sanding will also level out any imperfections of protrusions jutting out of the surface. For this task, you can use medium-grit sandpaper to even out and prepare the wall surface for the domestic plasters. Avoid using coarse or fine sandpaper because they will not do a proper job. Coarse sandpaper is rough and may gouge through the wall to create chips and blemishes, while fine sandpaper will create a finish that is too smooth for the plaster to adhere to.
Increase Wall Adhesion With Plaster Adhesive
You will need to purchase a plaster adhesive suitable to plasterboard from your local home improvement store for applying on your wall surface. This plaster adhesive will help to enhance plaster wall adhesion. Keep in mind that some plaster adhesives are formulated for wood and metal, while others are formulated for concrete. You will need to purchase an adhesive based on your existing wall material. This pre-mixed viscous solution can be applied to the wall surface with a broad putty knife. Make sure you have your gloves on while applying this because plaster adhesives have chemicals that can irritate your skin. Once you have applied the plaster adhesive on your wall, it is ready for the domestic plasterers to do their job.
